Biography

Andrew Hempstead has spent many years exploring, writing, and photographing worldwide. He has been writing since 1989, when, after leaving a career in the field of advertising, he took off for Alaska, linking up with veteran travel writer Deke Castleman to help research and update the fourth edition of Moon Handbooks Alaska-Yukon.

Over the last decade he has carved his own niche in the travel writing scene, authoring travel guides in partnership with San Francisco-based Avalon Travel Publishing to the following regions of Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver and Victoria, Nova Scotia, and Western Canada. In addition to these titles, Andrew is author of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island for Dummies (Wiley & Son), Frommer's Newfoundland and Labrador, and co-author of Moon Handbooks Atlantic Canada. He also contributes to Road Trip USA (Avalon Travel Publishing), Moon Handbooks San Juan Islands, Automap (Microsoft),  Best Places Northwest (Sasquatch Books), Green Guide to Canada (Michelin Travel Publications), Eyewitness Guide to the U.S.A. (Dorling Kindersley) , and subsequent editions of Moon Handbooks Alaska-Yukon. His writing has also appeared in numerous magazines and online for clients such as Alaska Airlines.

Further afield, Andrew is co-author of Moon Handbooks Australia and Moon Handbooks New Zealand and has traveled to Australia and New Zealand on assignment to write and photograph for National Geographic Traveler, the Guide Book Company, and Air Photo International. He has also traveled purely for pleasure through most of the United States, Europe, the South Pacific, and India.

Andrew's photography appears in all his guidebooks, and is also used by editorial, corporate, and government clients. Following a decade of representation by stock agencies in the U.S. and Europe, Andrew now markets his photography through the website Stock Photos from Canada where you will find sample galleries and stock photo lists.

Andrew and his wife Dianne also own Summerthought Publishing, the Banff-based publisher of the Canadian Rockies Trail Guide.

Andrew is accredited by the Canada Tourism Commission and is a member of the Travel Media Association of Canada (TMAC) and Editorial Photographers.
